High-power lasers go marching on:
High-power lasers for safety systems
At electronica (from November 9 to 12, 2004 in Munich), Osram Opto Semiconductors will be presenting a portfolio of high-power lasers for the automobile industry. Numerous standard products and customer-specific developments will enable these lasers to be used for example in adaptive cruise control (ACC) sensors and near infra-red night vision systems.
With a lifespan of more than ten years and an operating temperature range of -40 to +85°C, these pulse laser diodes from Osram Opto Semiconductors meet the stringent requirements of the automobile industry. They emit narrow-band light just above the visible spectrum, with wavelengths in the 800 to 1000 nm range and therefore cover the near infra-red range. Laser diodes with integrated electronics have no problems with electromagnetic compatibility and can achieve a light output of more than 10 W. Even higher outputs can be achieved by nanostack technology, which has been developed by Osram Opto Semiconductors. Nanostacks are groups of individual emitters that are grown epitactically one above the other during manufacture. This results in a stack of laser. From a distance, however, the light from this stack looks like a single speck of light. Laser diodes based on this technology emit light with a wavelength of 905 nm and achieve outputs of up to 75 W. Such high outputs are needed, for example, in near infra-red night vision systems which are designed to increase road safety at night.
They will mainly be used for measuring distances from one vehicle to the next. Applications in other industries include classifying objects and measuring speed, visibility and angles. Pre-crash sensors and adaptive cruise control systems use lasers for example as intelligent eyes.
