Advanced Power TopLED:
A power pack in the classic TopLED package
The Advanced Power TopLED is the latest addition to the series of super-bright light sources from Osram Opto Semiconductors. In terms of light output, it ranks between the Power TopLED and the Golden Dragon. The package itself is more or less the same as the Power TopLED. The main area of application for the LED will be the automotive market. Tail-light clusters are a good example.
The Advanced Power TopLED is perfect for applications where the light output of the Power TopLED is not enough but where the Golden Dragon would be too large. In terms of chip area it is three times as large as the Power TopLED. Its package, which has been tailored to the chip now has six “legs” instead of four and can therefore dissipate the heat better. It can operated at a higher current and therefore achieve a higher light output. Apart from the number of “legs”, the package is similar to that of the Power TopLED and, like the Power TopLED package, is suitable for standard solder processes.
In red and yellow, this new light source is a perfect candidate for tail-light clusters. The white version will find many uses in vehicle interiors and for backlighting dashboards and instrument panels. It can also be used to backlight TFT displays, to provide flash and torch functions on mobile phones and to act as the light source for industrial signal luminaires. Such luminaires are used for example to mark escape routes and provide emergency lighting in the event of a power failure.
The greater brightness of this light source means that fewer lighting modules are needed, installation is easier and complete lighting systems can be provided at a lower cost.

The larger chip, better heat dispersal and the perfect match of chip and package combine to improve the load capacity and performance of the LED.
