Osram makes the switch to LEDs easier
R&D experts in the Osram Development Labs in Hillsboro, USA, have come up with a really neat idea for using LEDs in rear light clusters. With the new LED module for rear light clusters, car manufacturers will benefit from the fact that Osram is the only lighting manufacturer to combine all the necessary areas of competence, namely LEDs, automotive lighting and electronic control gear, under one roof. The module will make it easier for car makers to switch to LED lighting.
Osram’s new concept will offer car manufacturers and suppliers a technology that allows them to install semiconductor light without the need for any LED know-how of their own. LED-specific requirements such as efficient heat dissipation will no longer be a problem for users. All these requirements are already met by the design of the module. The future product, designed to operate on a typical 12 V supply, can be used on different vehicle platforms without any problems at all.
The round prototype module fits in standard chassis designs. Initially it will be produced in red for rear light clusters and later also in amber for indicators. This approach should help break down the barriers that stand in the way of the relatively new LED technology.
LED benefits
The benefits of LEDs include low power consumption, high luminous efficacy, long life and availability in different colours. European manufacturers are already benefiting from another advantage of LEDs, namely their very small dimensions. Osram has cooperated with luminaire manufacturers to develop low-profile LED rear light clusters which open up completely new chassis design options.
