Allianz Arena - The High-Tech Chameleon:
Osram lights and electronics illuminate Europe’s most modern football stadium
One of the most spectacular features of the Allianz Arena is its external skin, made up of 2,800 foil panels which can be illuminated in different colours. At the two opening games on 30 and 31 May, over 25,000 fluorescent tubes will light up the Arena, which is considered to be Europe’s most modern football stadium, in its full glory for the first time.
The fluorescent tubes and associated 12,000 electronic operating devices which will allow the stadium to be illuminated in red (FC Bayern), blue (TSV 1860) and white (German national team) were supplied by Osram, one of the world’s two largest lighting manufacturers.
For the global player based in Munich, according to spokesperson Markus Rademacher, "using our lighting and our electronics to give this unique architectural vision its special radiance was a particular technical challenge".
The special membrane shell - a two-layered foil, just 0.2 mm thick, made from EFTE (ethylene tetrafluoro-ethylene) - called for high-quality lighting technology: "Lighting the membrane shell evenly and well was a real challenge for the lamp producer as well as for the luminaire producer. We had to find a combination of lamps with durable electronics and luminaires that were both innovative in terms of lighting technology and easy to install and service. This solution was developed jointly with Siteco Beleuchtungstechnik GmbH Traunreut and Osram."
Of the total of 2,874 lozenge-shaped inflated ETFE foil panels that give the Arena its characteristic appearance, 1,056 are illuminated. This corresponds to a total illuminated area of around 24,000 m². For this, a total of 25,500 Osram tubes and 4,250 Siteco luminaires have been installed and around 100 km of cable laid. The eye-catching structure is a real chameleon: When FC Bayern and TSV 1860 are playing at home, the Arena will be illuminated, in each case, in the colours of the home team.
