Companies cannot enter for this Design Award. Instead, they are nominated by the Ministries and Senators for Trade & Industry of the German States or by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.
It is a precondition for this, however, that a product has already been awarded a national or international prize.
No other Design Award sets its entrants such a strict criterion. Because of this, the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany is known as the "Prize of Prizes".
OSRAM products were nominated even twice: the spare lamp kits for cars and motorcycles.
To underline the application in motorcycles, OSRAM offers the NIGHT RACER and X-RACER motorcycle lamps in a convenient helmet box which can be used as a spare lamp kit too. It is the perfect companion, not only in countries with the obligation to carry spare lamps or drive with daytime running lights.
The outstanding design of this kit had already persuaded the "red dot award" jury. It awarded the "red dot" seal - this mark of excellence - for this kit in the category Communication Design.
Of course also in cars, the immediate replacement of burnt-out lamps is an important safety aspect. OSRAM offers all the relevant lamps in the MINIBOX, which was also awarded for its innovative design with the "red dot".
